Hi all

To install W8 developer edition (current version) as a VM with vmware workstation you have to download / upgrade to version 8. Version 7.1X and earlier won't work. Vmware player (current version) gives same problem as vmware workstation 7.1x.

When you install choose W7 as the OS (there isn't a W8 option yet not surprisingly) and select I will install the OS later.

Then select the DVD device in the vm serttings as a virtual ISO (you don't need to burn a physical DVD) and boot from the device.

Then it will install more or less as W7.

Ignore any prompt for a product key if it appears. I wasn't asked for one but some people seem to get a request for a product key when attempting to install W8 as a virtual machine.

You can download a free trial version for 30 days from the vmware site. ( it may be that eventually version 7.1x will work or the next upgrade of W8 will work so unless you want to upgrade to version 8 of vmware workstation I'd start with downloading the trial).

Then it installs OK

I don't have enough privileges yet to upload screenshot but it installs fine.

I've also posted a suggestion on how to remove / disable the metro gui for those that want a more "classical" Windows look - you can see the post in the W7 Forum until I can get approval to post in the relevant section on this Forum on customising W8

Will workstation 8 install over vmware player or as a separate install?

Good news about VMs again.

The latest VMware Workstation 9 brings a new UI and it's designed for Windows 8.

Read about it here:
VMware Announces VMware Workstation? 9

Also VMware Player 5 is available for download.

Looks like I posted this a bit fast, usually Jimbo beats me at VMware stuff. Sorry for this one.

D'oh. I have 2 licensed copies of VMWare Workstation at my office. One for me and 1 for a coworker. It's $119 to upgrade, or a free upgrade if you purchased after Aug 1st, 2012. I purchased on July 30, 2012. Sucks to be me

hey how does this VMware Workstation work?
it seems that you can run a os on a os
is this good soft ware and is there any other ones

its got a virtual thing or some thing
am know quite a bit about computers but i havent tried this virtual os thing
i like to run xp in win me so i can run win xp games and software or even vista in win me

A:VMware Workstation

Hi starcraftmasterVMware Workstation will indeed allow you to run an operating system within another. You say you want to run XP within ME. I am guessing that if you are running ME then perhaps your PC is fairly old and might not be up to running VMware. It would be best to vist their site and check out the system requirements for running it. http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/Note that you can trial VMware for 30 days before you have to part with your money. There are alternatives to VMwareMicrosoft's Virtual PC is free and can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en However it is not supported on ME.Sun's Virtual Box is also free and can be found here http://www.virtualbox.org/ Again you will need to check out the system requirements for running it.

I have been trying to configure a honeypot in VM using Bridged connection.

It is because that I have a server running Windows Server 2008 Standard. It works just fine and I am happy with that system. It is a "weak" computer, it is running on Intel Atom 1.6 GHZ, 2 GB ram, Club 3 grafic card. It is meant to be a powersaver. And no UAC enabled.

I have tried to install VmWare workstation, the same edition as I use here on my Vista. Works just fine. I can install it on Windows Server 2008 and I can get the dialog from which I can create a new VM. But I can't run the VM I have created. It dosn't give me an error message or anything, it simply just remain quite when I tries to open it.

I have installed Sun's Virtual Box and it runs fine with a XP installation, even better than I thought if you think that it is a Atom processor. I just need a linux installation.

Has somebody experienced anything similar?

If you are using VMWare Workstation with Windows 8.1 you will have to reinstall it. I attempted a repair first but that didn't work so I removed and reinstalled, and now all is working just fine. VMWare player worked without having to do a reinstall. . . good luck.

A:Windows 8.1 and VMWare Workstation

I did an uninstall/reinstall of VMWare Player 5.0.2 after upgrading Windows 8 to 8.1.
VMWare and the VMs ran OK but the Windows upgrade messed up the virtual network adapters.

The upgrade to Windows 8.1 also reset many of the preferences in my local user account, including such things as File Explorer settings, RDC default folder, Send To items, etc.
Overall relatively painless, but probably a bit confusing and frustrating for anyone non-technical, as once again the upgrade attempts to force you into creating a new online user account.

I run almost everything in VMs though, the only software installed on the Windows 8.x host is MS Office HS 2007, VMWare, and WinZip. So I wasn't expecting too much difficulty with the upgrade.

So far I do like the upgrade changes though...

I've done a clean install of windows 10 Pro but am now unable to get internet on a guest VM on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 . I just get a yellow ? Ethernet controller in device manager.
I tried my legal copies of Windows Me and Windows 3.11 and can get internet on them fine.

Everything was working fine when I had Windows 8.1 as a host.

A:VMWare workstation 11 no internet.

Try re-installing VMware. If that doesn't work, make sure that the firewall on host computer isn't blocking VMware, then update or install VMware Tools in the VMs. (I could give you step-by-step instructions but I'm sure you won't need them)

Based on a scenario, I have queries as following.

VMware Workstation 12 Pro is installed in a Windows 10 Desktop. As guest OS, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 R2 are installed in VMware Workstation.I have to do a setup for networking practice with guest OS.I have DHCP enabled router installed by the internet service provider.
Network setting of all guest OS is bridged and I have to install and configure DNS, DHCP and AD in Windows Server 2012 R2.

I am not able to configure DNS and DHCP in Windows Server 2012 R2.
I read, only one DHCP can be configured in a LAN and already a DHCP-enabled router in this LAN.

Please guide me a tip and trick for setting up networking with guest OS in this scenario.

I believe, I explained well.

I'm using VMWare Workstation 11, which is installed on Win 8.1. I have no issues with USB 2.0 drives in the guest operating systems, but for some reason, can't get 3.0 drives to work. I've tested this using Win 7 and Win 8.1 as guest operating systems.

I've done a bit of searching, but can't seem to find any reports of my exact issue. The only documentation I could find is for version 9, because it wasn't supported in that version. Looks like version 10 and beyond it should not be an issue.

Hello Guys, Hope you all are fine.

I want to install some of the programs and OS that I want to test before installing them on my actual computer. But, here I am confused between the two Virtualization Products:-

1) Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2.16

2) VMware Workstation 9.0.2

Both of these are popular and will work flawlessly but my question is that which would be more better to work. I know that VBox is free and is GNU whereas VMware is expensive but I am ready to pay for it if its better.

Please help me and tell which I should use.

I need the following qualities:-

1) Easy to use User Interface
2) Reliable
3) Work Flawlessly
4) Should not decrease my Host Performance
5) Should have a good Graphics Acceleration

A:Which Is Better VirtualBox Or VMware Workstation 9

There are tons of articles on this one. Google it: Workstation vs VirtualBox
Here's a recent one:
Review: VMware Workstation 9 vs. VirtualBox 4.2 | Virtualization - InfoWorld

Each time, Workstation wins overall due to the stability, reputation and features it has + you get better performance at cpu and gpu in a VM.

VirtualBox would win the host performance section because it doesn't slow the host (or the least slowdown you can get): no services are installed at all and of course also the best price tag which is free. For the rest, go to Workstation's features. All VirtualBox VM's are usually fast.

Workstation has just a minor impact on performance (due to a lot of features + services) and with modern hardware this isn't a problem at all. Workstation VM's are usually more advanced if you consider the different hardware versions (to choose from) and so many system resources propped in a VM when needed.

On Workstation you also have the best graphic acceleration of the two and drag and drop exists (VBox still works at dnd and is experimental for Linux only at the moment).

If by the way you also need real stretched full screen the you'll need Workstation for its "exclusive mode".
VirtualBox has something called "scale mode" but the graphics still have issues in this mode.

In the end Workstation Unity Mode integrates best between host and guest.

Something I didn't found much about online yet:
Workstation's UEFI mode supports also Windows so you can have U... Read more

Does anyone here have experience with VMWare workstation's 'management server'?
I run offline virtual machines but they require BOTH encryption and management, because of this I have consistently been having issues with this management server, the error is 'could not open virtual machine [path], failed to contact the restrictions management server. Check the address of the server', which is not surprising that it can't connect to the server; the host is offline. What does surprise me is that I've maxed out all the settings with regards to this management server (maximum 999 days without contact), but the error is STILL shown, really, 999 days have not passed since I created this virtual machine so why is the error being shown?
Does anyone have any solutions to this problem that should never have arisen?

Hi there
1) can the HOST machine connect to the Internet -- this might be obvious but often the Simplest solutions tend to be the correct answer.

2) Is the Virtual adapter connected AND enabled.

3) Firewalls / router blocking the Virtual XP machine.

Incidentally when I did a W7 Upgrade I couldn't get VM networking to work at all until I'd re-installed vmware.

If you did a W7 Upgrade just re-install vmware (and vmware tools onve the vm is powerd on).

Normally NAT is no problem.

You could also try changing the Networking to "Bridged" although this can give problems if your HOST adapter is a Wireless adapter.

Since this is a rather complex software I'd like to get it out of my OS the the good way.

Hi there.

I got esxi running but not really satisfied with performance and the hassle of controlling VM's from a remote computer.

So I decided to re-visit using KVM (can be considered Linux's equivalent to HYPER-V). KVM is free of course (it's part of most Linux distros - but RHEL (and Centos naturally) has this down to a fine art so install documentation is really good.

It turned out surprisingly easy from a CENTOS 7 HOST and I/O performance is STREETS ahead of both VMWARE workstation and the VM running under Esxi.

The other nice thing is that you can also control the VM's on the LOCAL HOST. PCI passthru works fine and you can use "paravirtualisation" if you want to install specific hardware drivers on the VM to extract even better performance.

VMware esxi VM's can be converted easily enough - or re-installing the Guest OS is a doddle anyway.

(Note - you have to enable VT-X in the BIOS on intel CPU's --usually all done by default these days -- for AMD there's an equivalent but don't know what it is).

Very happy with this solution -- you can install a minimal Linux system and control everything via a CLI if you don't want a Linux GUI. I'd recommend doing it from the GUI for beginners.

For those playing around with Linux Hosts who want to try other ways of running Windows Guests I'd recommend having a look at KVM -- it really is surprisingly easy -- AND STABLE !!!. Also being able to control the VM's from a local host is a great advantage for ... Read more

My laptop is a HP 8470p Elitebook, Windows 7 32bit, 4GB ram, Windows Enterprise.

I recently installed VMWare workstation and all was well for a day or 2. Unfortunately I was had to force powering off (holding down power button) because my laptop was not responding whatsoever and ever since then I am facing BSOD no matter what I try.

There seems to be 3 different messages i get during the BSOD:

3. The driver is mismanaging system PTEs

I have tried the following:

- Before installing VMWare Workstation i enabled virtualization in BIOS. I have disabled this.
- I've tried uninstalling VMWare workstation, i recieve an error ("MSI '' error") and am unable to uninstall.
- Removing RAM modules independently.
- Selective Startup

Out of the above, the only one that made a difference was selective startup. I disabled all startup items and restarted. It loaded the Windows boot animation and then went to a black screen with just the mouse cursor.

Since then it will no longer let me boot into safe mode, it just goes straight into a BSOD with the "mismanaging system PTEs" error.

Could someone please help, this is driving me nuts!

I should add that I'm not 100% sure it it VMWare Workstation that caused this, but that was the last thing i did before the BSODs.

Thanks in advance.

I tried VMWare Workstation 9 on Windows 8. VMWare Workstation is probably the best choice for an alternative of XP Mode. XP Mode is supported by Windows 7, but I use Windows 8. The sound of my virtual machine (Win XP) is strange, scratchy, distorted... The problem can simply be Windows 8 (it's a new OS), but I'm trying to have an alternative of XP Mode to play old games et use old sofware. Without a good sound, it's not very interesting.

Does anyone have this problem ?

I found something intersting on VMWare's forum : VMware Communities: Audio stuttering on VMware Workstation...

A:Strange sound with VMWare Workstation

Yes I have that sometimes.
Still a mystery but can be related to underclocked CPU (power plan options) I use, or in general no updated VM tools.

Use 1 CPU for VM's where you test old programs (including games). Seems to work better.

In the link you posted, they say something about the virtual hardware version.
You can upgrade if needed to the latest version 9 in the interface but I use Player and need to edit the VMX file manually.
But sometimes, downgrading is also needed.

See here:
How to (manually) upgrade VM's in VMware Player
This applies to Workstation as well.

Use what works best for the needed VM.

Version 9 for the VM:

virtualHW.version = "9"

Version 8:

virtualHW.version = "8"

and Version 6.5 - 7:

virtualHW.version = "7"

Drivers differ between these versions. Older programs may work better with older settings + 1CPU.

Some older games (I already talked about this issue) work bad in a XP VM with tools installed.
Therefore use a Win98 or ME virtual machine and here you can use VM tools (older version 7 is the latest provided in this case + no 3D acceleration, keep in mind).

Hope I mentioned something useful for this case.

Thanks for the link.

I'm running Windows 7 and VMWare Workstation 7, and I cannot access the internet from any virtual machines using bridged connections. I used to be able to, so I'm not quite sure what happened. I did not modify anything within VMWare....

bridged connections are set as they were by default - to use vmnet0. They are capable of pulling an IP and DHCP info from the router, but beyond that they cannot access the internet or do anything else.

On the win7 host machine, under network adapters, I do not see vmnet0 listed - I'm not sure if it is supposed to be or not. It only shows vmnet1 (host-only) and vmnet8 (NAT).

I would rather use bridged connections if possible, but just cannot seem to get it to work.

Yesterday, I couldn't even get NAT to work. It could ping servers, but I couldn't actually use the internet - I guess ICMP was working but not TCP for some reason, although I hadn't modified anything. I updated from VMWare 6.5 to 7.0 and now NAT works, but bridged connections still fail.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? I've searched the web for solutions but haven't found any that worked (disable vmware adapters, modify registry so that they don't show up under public unidentified networks, etc).

Could it be related to the fact that vmnet0 doesn't show up anywhere on the host machine? I'm not sure if it is supposed to or not - vmnet1 and vmnet8 both show up under network adapters and using ipconfig/all. However, vmnet0 does not show up between ei... Read more

I have been using VMware 11 which I am new too, And also playing with a new windows 10 install.
I have installed a genuine win 7 copy which was activated and then installed win 10 from inside win 7 and this also activated without problem. So left with a working activated copy of windows 10

After a few days I thought I would do a fresh install from a ISO and wipe the disk. This worked fine as expected and is still activated and running fine.

I then thought with all my playing with the disk I would do a FULL clone of this clean install so it would be a good starting point and a backup just in case something happened to the other VM and snapshots. I then tried to run this clone but now windows stays this clone is not activated. No matter what I do.

I then went back to the original VM and this still is activated fine.

I thought a cloned VM computer would not trigger the activation process if it was used on the same Host pc with the same settings.

Anyone have any ideas ??

As many of the users in MT use Virtual Machines, between the two free options, which one you recommend and why?

What features does each contain that you use?
What OS do use it inside the VM (Virtual Machine)?

A:Oracle VirtualBox 5.0.16 or VMware Workstation Player 12.0.1

Oracle VirtualBox version 5 because...
It's Free and has regular updates, bugs are fixed quick + OpenSource.
Works amazing on Windows and Linux (my malware research setup / automated malware analysis is on linux) + VirtualBox-Tools give VirtualBox compatibility and usability (faster and better performance then VMPlayer).

When installing fedora 20 using VMware Workstation 10 with win8.1 host, the message "cable unplugged" appears during installation.
Unavailability of network cable persists after completion of installation.
Problem not replicated with VirtualBox.
Old VMs also fail to access network.

A:Message cable unplugged with VMware Workstation 10

Hmmm....my licensed copy of VMWare Workstation is on a Windows 7 machine. I didn't have any problems with the "cable unplugged" message.

Perhaps uninstall and reinstall VMWare Workstation again.

A:Which VMware workstation player to install on windows 10

VMware workstation is at version 12.1 and can be installed Windows 10,8,or 7 64 bit only, They stopped making 32 bit versions of VMware Workstation at 10.1 and that can be installed on Windows 10,8,or 7 32 bit computers.

Yes you can run almost any version of Windows on it and also most versions of Linux, I think it is even possible to run Android 86 but I'm not sure I haven't tried Android yet

Hi there
For XP users who want to keep using their XP system why not run VMWARE VMPLAYER -- FREE in UNITY MODE.

You don't need even to run Windows as your Host --I've posted in the FORUM how to create a Portable system that runs Windows Virtual machines and totally boots from an external HDD / USB stick (even if there's no HDD in the main computer !!).

Using Unity mode simply gives you access to all your Windows XP programs (and runs them) directly from the Host
without you needing to enter the VM at all -- Power up your VM and simply click the Unity mode on the vm menu.

If you use Linux as a host it saves you having to purchase a new version of windows (Linux is FREE). Simply convert your XP system to a VM and then you can keep running XP for as long as you like without worrying about having to upgrade Windows.

On VMWare Workstation 11, running either Windows 8.1 or 10 Tech preview clients, disk usage spikes and sits at 100% or near there, from the time it starts up till the time I shut it down. My system has more than sufficient resource and I am only ever trying to run but one client. This disk usage issue is causing frequent hangs and sluggishness in host AND client. For ex, just trying to get the Windows Tech build upgraded to build 10074 took, no lie, 11 hours!!!! Not acceptable.

I have read all the VMWare KB's and searched forums as well as spent hours on the phone with VMWare Support and still nowhere close to coming to a resolution. Im not extremely knowledgeable about VMWare but not exactly a newbie. Looking for anything that might resolve this. I just want to troubleshoot the Win 8.1 VM client for simplicity.
Host :64-bit OS, Win 8.1Pro fully updated

Client : 64-bit OS, Win 8.1 Pro Fully updated

I have Windows 8.1 installed on an external hard drive. actually installed...like you would on an internal drive (WinToUSB - Install and Run Windows on a USB Drive)
and I want to use it with my main PC without booting entirely from it... which is where VMWare comes into play.
So, want to boot from external drive containing Windows 8.1 using VMWare
Anyone know how?

A:Booting from external hard drive in VMWare Workstation?

Hi there
AFAIK the only way to boot Windows from an external HDD is to either use a Windows to Go system (Enterprise) or create a bootable Linux system (these boot from external devices) and run a VM from the Linux.

I've done this many times on an external USB connected via a SATA==>USB connector on a laptop. I use an old Laptop HDD -- works fine. If you have a SATA==>USB3 connector even better or an external USB even better.

Here's a link about this I made a while ago.

How to make Portable Windows system (any version)

This system will run TOTALLY from am external HDD even if there's NO internal HDD in the HOST computer. Other solutions like attaching Virtual HDD's are OK but this then NEEDS the initial boot from an internal HDD to mount the VHD. My method runs 100% from the external HDD.

Hello all, this is my frist thread on this site but I have used previous threads many times from here to troubleshoot other issues I've had.

We have a Windows 7 Host running VMware Workstation with 5 virtual machines, One Windows server, 2 Windows 7 machines and 2 Windows XP machines.

The host and non server VM's are fine, they run 100% of the time and never have problems, my SBS 2011 VM is another story. There have been nothing but crashe's over the past 6 months and they are fairly random.

I beleive the server BSOD's and then it reboots, upon rebooting it just sits at a black loading windows screen forever until you completely power it off and then back on, at which time it boots up normally.

The BSOD's happen ususaly around 12 AM when Windows server backup runs and creates a server backup on another server over the network, the backup runs 7 days a week but we only see the BSOD about twice a month.

I have run through drivers in my SBS 2011 install and all seem up to date to me.

Please if anyone can help me out on this one it would be greatly appreciated.

I see lots of users have viewed my post here but does no one have any idea what might be going on?
Maybe I should move this to another forum? Is this one mainly for Windows 7 and not the server stuff?

Hi Folks,
I found your website with a search that led to a very similar problem I am having, found it in this post: Dell Precision M6400 BSOD

I have a Dell Precision M6400, and I am trying to get VMWare workstation to run but it BSODs within minutes (sometimes longer) when running in a VM. It does this regardless of which VM I am running (I have made three, XP, Win7, and Debian). The laptop is completely stable when not running Workstation, so I am guessing there is some type of conflict with what I have installed.

The guest VM will boot up and I can begin working in it, then after some heavy activity (could be anything, file edits, compiles, Windows Updates, etc) the guest will stutter freeze, then freeze up. Within a minute or so the Host will BSOD.

I have uploaded my SevenForums info package for your input.

Any help appreciated!
Clark Freeman
